Research Blog: Commercial Conventions
I will be creating a TRESemmé shampoo commercial. I chose this product because I have been working at a hair salon for a few years. I wanted to incorporate haircare into my commercial because it is something that I am interested in.
In these commercials, you will typically see people with long, voluminous hair. They are usually in the bathroom, washing their hair with the product. Sometimes they may be at a hair salon having their stylist wash it for them. They flaunt their hair everywhere they go. This shows how the product has made their hair become an essential part of their life. The women are usually happy and charismatic. The costumes used are robes, business attire, casual attire, or semi-formal attire, depending on the scene portrayed. The props include but are not limited to bushes, salon chairs, flat iron, blow dryer shampoo, a mirror, etc. The model's hair appears to be clean and silky. There are always a few shots of the product with an explanation of the main ingredients that will improve the quality of one's hair. These commercials always project a happy image. A score is played to captivate the audience and show them how they could feel after using this product. In TRESemmé commercials, there are only non-diegetic sounds. The advertisers use voiceovers to describe the product. In the end, there is usually a shot of the collection of products with the companies slogan, "Professional.Affordable." The slogan lets the audience know that TRESemmé is a brand that is trusted by professionals. The saying will allow consumers to become more interested in the product because professional stylists are credible people who know what hair needs to flourish.
