Critical Reflection Questions

 Creative Critical Reflection

1. How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?  My product utilized several types of conventions that are commonly seen in hair commercials. The conventions that were used enhanced the audience's engagement with the commercial. I used bright lights in the hair salon to keep a happy interface amongst the video. The convection of the model using the product on her hair was portrayed. The main convention of the model going from frizzy hair to voluminous hair was conveyed through the transformation at the end. I used a score throughout the video that was bright and insinuated a happy mood. The convention challenged was the credibility of the hairstylist. In the average commercial, they utilize a well-known celebrity stylist endorsing the product. Other than that, everything was the same.

This commercial would represent people who enjoy taking care of their hair or is interested in getting healthy hair. The social groups seen are women with a 4B/ 4C hair type.

 2. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?

My product would appeal to women if it were on in the middle of the day between a daytime talk show or SOAP opera. It would gain attraction because the viewership of these shows are predominately women. It would be promoted on social media. The two platforms that would be suitable for advertising this product would be Instagram and TikTok. On Instagram, many would check out the advertisement while scrolling down their timeline. On TikTok, the algorithm will create attraction to the videos. The video would have to be innovative to gain popularity from the general public.

3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

My production skills developed throughout this project by leading my team. I usually watch everything that occurs. However, directing this commercial was something that I thought would feel unnatural and overbearing. Fortunately, I was comfortable in relaying my vision. This project has helped me develop many skills. I have made short films in the past. However, the terms that I learned have helped me enhance my skills. Using editing tools like iMovie was a new experience. Compared to my previous experience with iMovie, this time I had to troubleshoot through many things. I had to use another application called Splice to edit the majority of my project. This app was completely foreign to me at the time. Here, I got to experiment with different techniques that I have not used before.

4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware, and online – in this project?

The technologies that I utilized through the project were iMovie, Splice, and YouTube. iMovie is a software that I know but is still figuring out new techniques every time that I use it. Throughout this project, I used transitions and the voiceover tool to bring the commercial to life. Splice is a newer software that I found because iMovie was not functioning correctly. This app is a lifesaver. I think Splice has what iMovie does not have. The problem that I had to was when I was using my MacBook. I think the reason I was having so many problems was because I do not have much space on my hard drive. After I edited my project on another device, I uploaded it to youtube and posted the video on my blog.
